From Syan to Home
The core idea is to reinterpret a local legend from Przemyśl related to the Syan River. It refers to the act of purification through the washing of particular artefacts.
The video shows tableware that survived in destroyed houses from Russian shelling in the de-occupied and temporarily occupied territories. These broken, burnt items symbolise the condition of Ukrainians forced to be evacuated from dangerous zones. The Syan River symbolises Narodnyi Dim, which has welcomed Ukrainian refugees, embraced them, and washed out their wounds caused by the war.
The exhibition, consisting of video pieces and found tableware, was essentially an interactive tea party, which we were inspired by the weekly meetings during the residency. The Syan River is meditatively documented as a symbol of purification in a video. The latter is on as the exposition background in one of the rooms. We decided to give these items a second life and utilise their purpose - to provide warmth to people. This project is a token of gratitude to the Narodnyi Dim for their constant support of Ukrainian refugees. Since the first thing you want to offer a guest is tea, at the opening, a performative action took place: we filled five cups with tea and symbolically invited visitors to share them. These items show signs of burning: remnants of burnt glass on the cups' walls, which cannot be removed. This tableware was sent to us by our acquaintances who lost their homes. We had a chance to get to know them while volunteering and filming a documentary about the consequences of Russian crimes.
The exhibition features items from the following regions: Oleksandrivka village (Kherson region), Lukashivka and Kolychivka villages (Chernihiv region), and the city of Bakhmut. These sites are not random.
This artwork was created during the residency at the Narodnyi Dim in Przemyśl.
