The artwork was created during the residency of the Quadrenniale di Roma «Et in Arcadia ego» in the city of Santa Severa, during the full-scale Russia-Ukraine war. Physical detachment forces the author to immerse even more in the Ukrainian media space, and a manic desire to constantly monitor the news arises. This is the first way to keep in touch. At the same time, the author tries to explore what home means to him, recalling a temporarily abandoned house. This is the second way. Where these two states meet, layering on top of each other, a plant grows. The prototype is the author’s indoor plants, which now remain in Kyiv, and a gesture symbolising the trident - the state emblem of Ukraine. The coat of arms contains the encrypted word «volia», which has many meanings in the Ukrainian language, including determination, perseverance, will, desire, freedom, and independence. At the same time, the negative form «nevolia» means slavery. This fact is known to most Ukrainians, while the gesture symbolising the trident is not that widespread. Recently, it received a new wave of discussions when the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, in collaboration with the design studio Banda, presented an alternative gesture for Independence Day. On the one hand, it caused criticism due to the unsuccessful design of the new gesture. On the other hand, it revived the use of the old one.
