How to Separate: a D.I.Y. Guide
The project, co-authored with Kateryna Yermolayeva deals with the phenomenon of social othering – stigmatization of a certain minority group by the vocal part of the majority. A genealogy of the negative image of the Other is traced in a number of formative steps. Initially, a combination of negative social traits is essentialized into a separate hostile identity. The process culminates when the Other is spatially localized, forming the basis for political separation. At the same time, the omnipresent image of the Other maintains an important societal role – it sustains group coherence by testing individual identities against the negative archetype that deviates from perceived normality. Thus, the borders of imagined communities become outlined.
