In my work, I appropriate a photograph from a military archive. I use a lengthy drawing practice to get as close as possible to the image and feel its influence. This image of pain is both ecstatic and unbearable.
I study the feeling of empathy towards a person, but this empathy has excessive supersensible nature and allows you to rise above feelings. This emotional action identifies itself not with a real person. It instead identifies itself with one’s projection, which is formed based on notionally codified physiognomic and even aesthetic signs.
