Homo-Animalis
It is not hard to imagine humanity before the emergence of society. The state of nature presents
itself as an endless war of all against all, wherein a life of man is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” This dystopia is bloody enough to scare humanity into ways of reason and mutual preservation. Universal and inalienable human rights are expected to finally render impossible any return to the state of primaeval cruelty. However, their proclamation remains a desideratum, a set of codified prescriptions born out of wishful thinking. The tooth and claw inevitably humble the soft power of such statements.
