Faces of War

Technique:
Digital collage
Year:
2022

These artworks were made in the technique of collages. I used some real photos and quotes from the Suspilne media materials. And then, I removed the faces to show that this is the collective image of all Ukrainians. Since I had to seek shelter in Ternopil, I did not have the usual materials for my artistic work, so I created the collages on a smartphone. It did not allow me to fully convey what I felt. Nevertheless, these are essential time marks.

At that time, it hurt me terribly that someone had to suffer much worse than me. It hurt that, being in an evacuation and not at home, I could not bring bread to my neighbours or simply hug them during this challenging time. It hurt me that my dad was left there without me; that all my efforts are a drop in the ocean. And it was just insanely painful and shameful that I couldn't do more. I never stayed away, and I understood that I would find something to help in Ternopil as well. But I will never forgive this evacuation train, these tears and this pain. I know we will win, and at what cost.

Someone cooks food. Someone weaves nets. Someone joins the Territorial defence. We all do what we can to win the war. The news keeps us up to date, so I chose some material about real superhumans and tried to visualise them. We all fight in different ways, but truly, and we will all triumph.
